In our journey through life, we often encounter various challenges that shape who we are. These challenges can lead to emotional pain, confusion, and a sense of disconnection from ourselves. However, what if I told you that within you lies a powerful tool for healing? This tool is the concept of embracing your internal parts. By understanding and accepting these different aspects of ourselves, we can embark on a transformative path toward healing and self-discovery.

Understanding our internal parts can feel like a daunting task. We may think of ourselves as a single entity, but in reality, we are made up of various parts that represent different emotions, experiences, and beliefs. Each part has its own voice and perspective, and by acknowledging them, we can begin to heal the wounds that hold us back.

Internal Parts Awareness

The P.A.R.T.S. acronym is to assist in the beginning steps internal awareness are the P.A.R.T.S. steps:

  1. Present: Honor yourself by being present in this moment

Begin by taking a moment to reflect on your feelings and thoughts. Ask yourself:

  • What is the "loudest or brightest" part coming up for me?

  • Take a moment to do a grounding exercise, feel your feet on the floor, and your body weight in the chair.

  • Do a short, slow set of three breaths while intentionally following your breath.

  • Perform a body scan to see if parts of your body are trying to communicate and listen.

Write down your thoughts, feelings, and/or parts that arise. This exercise can help you notice the internal here and now. In addition, practicing being present increases self-awareness.

2. Alignment: Discover & stay focused on what aligns with yourself

  • Define alignment and what it means for your human experience.

  • Internal check-in (your alignment is precisely that: yours).

  • Ask yourself: "Am I getting in my own way?" If so, the internal curiosity process is needed (licensed professional required). "Does this align with my picture of success for myself?" If not, the internal curiosity process is needed (licensed professional required).

3. Regulation/Resources (Internal & External)

  • Do I feel regulated? If not, can I focus on the dysregulated part of me?

  • What are my strengths that I can draw from to help with regulation? Internal: mindfulness, resilience, patience, self-awareness, self-compassion, etc. External: friends, family, partner, fur-babies, etc.

  • Healthy diet for mind/body care

  • Spiritual connection

4. Togetherness: Internal Collaboration

  • Recognize the "driver of the bus" internally (are my actions driven by an emotion or experience that occurred).

  • Become aware of the feeling of being a whole person (completeness)

  • Remind yourself of alignment.

5. Success

Once you have a picture of success, the path can become more transparent and navigable. Allow that picture of success to become more realistic and tangible.

  • Envision in the mind's eye.

  • Express gratitude to yourself for your future accomplishments and resilience toward the goal.

  • Continual check-ins for alignment and togetherness.

We will work together to master these steps. Tools and strategies to accomplish this will be implemented in your thoughts, emotions, and actions to build confidence in moving forward.
